DeSoto County Holds Spring Clean Up Event

DeSoto County got busy with its spring cleaning on Saturday, the start of this year’s Spring Clean Up Week that continues through this coming Sunday.

“Saturday was an overwhelming success….and we are still going strong!” said County Environmental Services Director Ray Laughter. “There were over 800 documented participants and this upcoming Saturday, the City of Horn Lake, the City of Walls, and Woodland Lakes in Eudora will have their events. They have over 200 participants signed up to help with their Clean Up. That will make 45 total teams and over 1,000 total participants.”

Kicked off early Saturday at the Memphis Stone and Gravel Company’s DeSoto plant off Highway 51 in Southaven, one group worked around the facility, covering areas along Highway 51, Star Landing Road, Robertson Road, and Austin Road.

That group covered about 3.5 miles of roadway, picking up whatever litter they found. The litter was bagged and taken back to the base, where it was to picked up from there and disposed of.

The weeklong Spring Clean Up is a concerted effort of the county, its cities and the Keep DeSoto County Beautiful effort.

DeSoto County communities were stepping in with their own organized efforts for their city on Saturday.

For instance, in Hernando, a team with the Mayor’s Youth Council was put together to clean up any litter that may be on the outlying areas of the Hernando High School.

A group also started at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and from City Hall went along Elm Street.

The push will continue during the week, as residents are encouraged to find items to clean out of their attic or garage and take advantage of the dumpster locations across the county.

They are located at Lewisburg Elementary School, Love Fire Department, Nesbit Water Association, Summershill Fire Department #1 in Olive Branch, Robertson-Donald Park, Hernando Middle School, Horn Lake Middle School, Cockrum Old Schoolhouse, Walls, Fairhaven and Bridgetown fire departments, Eudora Park, ACI Ingram Mill Fire Department, and at Greenbrook Park in Southaven.

“The dumpsters will continue to be out through this weekend,” said District 1 Supervisor Jesse Medlin. “We encourage everyone to continue cleaning up because by keeping your property and residence in good repair with an attractive curb appeal, it is an investment in property values, deters crime, sets a good example to all ages and instills pride in ownership.”

Tire, White Goods and Oil Recycle locations have also been set up and information on what can and cannot be taken is available on the county website, www.desotocountyms.gov.

Teams that were out this past Saturday included Memphis Stone and Gravel, the Board of Supervisors, Lewisburg High School National Honor Society, Colonial Hills, Alexander’s Ridge, Mitchell’s Corner, The Well Church at Lewisburg, Lewisburg Middle School Choir, Lewisburg Elementary Honor Society, Maples United Methodist Church Youth Group, Belmor Lakes, Flicker Ridge, Old Towne Olive Branch, Girl Scouts Heart of the South Troop 13922 at DeSoto Central, Victory Baptist Church, Hernando Mayor’s Youth Council, Northwest Mississippi Community College DeSoto Center, Region IV, Wolf Den Pack 41 Hernando, Kroger Horn Lake, Tanger Outlets, Southaven Arts Council, and a host of individual citizen teams.
