MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 13, 2016 – Memphis Stone & Gravel, sister company of Lehman-Roberts Company, yesterday held the grand opening of its new plant in DeSoto County (3745 Hwy. 51 N., Southaven, MS 38672).

“We are thrilled to be opening a new facility in an area, which has such quality resources,” said Hal Williford, president and chief executive officer of Memphis Stone & Gravel. “We are extremely grateful to our exploration team for locating these quality reserves, as well as the local government for understanding the need for construction aggregates, allowing Memphis Stone & Gravel to work in partnership with the city of Southaven.”

Williford said that due to most of the reserves in both DeSoto County and Shelby County being mined or sterilized by development, there are limited resources remaining. Memphis Stone & Gravel had explored this particular property years ago, but the owners just recently decided to sell the land.

The new facility, sitting on approximately 25 acres, began producing material in April and will officially open for business this month. There are approximately 108 acres of reserved area left to be mined. The plant, which produces 800 tons of material per hour, is mining five different products, including three types of sand and four varieties of gravel.

Many employees from the company’s Anderson plant have relocated to the DeSoto facility, which is projected to be a flagship operation for the company and key resource for its customers due to the location.

“Similar to real estate, location is everything,” said Williford. “Transportation is a major expense in construction, so the closer the materials are to the market, the more everyone will benefit.”
